"When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature.
If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world,
I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young."

Frequently Asked Questions
Whom do we serve?
3rd-5th grade students in San Diego.

How are students selected for the program?
Classroom teachers identify students who would enjoy and benefit from one-on-one reading support and individualized attention. Parents/guardians are contacted, and interested families commit to at least one quarter of reading support for their child.

What is the time commitment? How often do reading mentors and students meet?
We ask students and mentors to commit to one quarter of reading together (3-4 months), and this can be extended each quarter. Reading sessions are twice a week for 30 minutes.

Where is The Reading Hall?
We are virtual program, so we do not have a physical location. Our reading mentors work with students in San Diego via Zoom.

Who can become a reading mentor?
The skills that teachers build when working with students is invaluable, so we require mentors to have demonstrated a prior commitment to education. This includes teaching in a traditional educational setting, studying education, coaching/tutoring, online schooling, and more. If you are interested in volunteering and are not sure whether you have the experience necessary, please contact us!

What training do reading mentors go through before working with children?
The Reading Hall provides training to all new volunteers, where they review best practices and reading strategy teaching techniques. All reading mentors follow set guidelines of how to work with the children in order to build strong relationships and strengthen academic skills.
